PRAXIS/PROVIDENCE -=- e g g w o r l d
Submission for Dungeon Crawler Jam 2023.
Post-jam patch notes (March 2024):
- Save/Load support. Many technical changes to support this. Complete rewrite of data structures, map & object rendering, doors (I hate doors so much), and more.
- Many technical changes. Tile size doubled. Adjustable draw distance. Variable quality settings, window resizing and fullscreen options.
- FoV increased from 45 to 90. Camera points slightly down by default, but looks up and zooms in when approaching other characters.
- New minimap. Improved performance and smoother updates, sublayers, live detection of destroyed walls and dead NPCs/enemies, additional visual changes.
- New tile art, including animated water. Revisions to all existing textures. Added paintings and a few simple 3D furniture models. Lighting differences in day/night/indoors.
- New fence barriers, making pointless parts of the map inaccessible.
- Skybox adjustments to make low draw distance settings less finnicky, plus visual adjustments to warp effects, easing functions for animation timings, etc.
- Various visual effects. Particles, CRT screen effects (on higher graphics settings only).
- Added and improved tutorial and hint text in the log to make quests and gameplay more intuitive. Added feedback when attempting to talk to hostile NPCs.
- Move speed increased from 0.25s to 0.15s. (If it still seems slow, it's a performance issue. Try another browser or the desktop version, or lowering the in-game graphics setting.)
- Added event timers to keep players from overlooking important dialogues (eg spam-attacking past a combat state change).
- Additional usages of colored text, for emphasis, and wherever else I felt like doing it.
- Adjusted behaviors for finnicky edge cases like picking up an item while facing an NPC, dropping items in an open door tile, or when holding the modifier key.
- Health now also displayed on the minimap tab -- the one you almost always want to be on. No longer forces a switch to the stats tab when taking damage.
- Dying now properly resets the game instead of just telling you to refresh or quit to reset data.
- A few fun new dialogue changes, events or lines in various pointless or unlikely conditions.
- A couple death animations & effects.
- Volume settings, quieter sounds by default, timing adjustments.
- Title screen.
- Many bug fixes.
- Combat still sucks, I didn't do anything about that.
Controls and gameplay
- WASD to move, QE to turn.
- F opens doors, talks to characters, picks up items, etc.
- Space uses the item in the right hand. Typically this will be your attack button.
- Shift uses the item in the left hand. By default, this is the pearl, which transports you between two worlds. A path may be blocked in one world, but maybe not the other?
- Number keys (1-4) can be used to swap between UI tabs.
- The period (.) key is a modifier that, if held, allows some extra shortcuts and options. For example, (Y) equips items, but (.+Y) unequips them. (.+Up/Down) also scrolls the text log. These are also accessible from a button on the settings tab.
- The mouse can be used to use items (left click) or drop (right click). You can also hold to drag things into the ground slot area to drop them, or to slots in your equipment tab.
- P for preferences.
Submission details
- Theme: Duality. There are two sides to this island, and all things are interrelated.
- Made in one week in Construct 3. Some assets are reused from a previous jam game. A lot of underlying systems work for the the inventory/UI and text log, was made for use across multiple projects.
- Asset disclosure: Some assets were made before the jam, as placeholders I did not have time to redraw. The empty player hand and knife were used in a previous game, "Wayne's World 3". Some other placeholder art/UI icons carried over from the aforementioned systems work, save/load icons, etc. I made the typefaces years ago. Sound effects were purchased for use from GameDev Market. A license is available here.
- The game has an ending! Can you find it?
Credits
- This game was not made by me alone. I have many cool people to thank.
- Additional character art (and a certain player hand animation) provided by Jason (@mydadisdracula), Luke (@lukehumphris), Keith (@keithito), Chris Rosier.
- Music by Andrew de Koning.
- Additional support from Ben (@lecithin) (who named the game), and Justin Boyd.
- Thanks to Luke also for curating many sounds for the project, and for creating some tile art I ultimately wasn't able to use.
